Identification

Nymph identification: 1.2 to 31 mm in size.  Perlidae are identifiable by the thoracic gills, with D. cephalotes nymphs tending to be much darker than P. bipunctata.

Habitat

Fast flowing rivers with stable substrata.

Life cycle

This species has a merovoltine life history, taking an estimated three years to complete its life cycle. Adult flight period is from April to June and nymphs are present all year.

Irish distribution

Not common, with isolated distributions found in only a limited number of upland (>200 m) rivers in the south, south west and north west of the country.   Has been recorded from 52 10km squares in Ireland.
