Species Biology

Identification

  • Body length: 5-8mm
  • Head, thorax and abdomen black in colour
  • Legs predominantly black, with some paler/redder segments
  • Easily confused with other black solitary wasps and the use of specialist keys and a microscope will be necessary  

Habitat

Irish records suggest some association with gardens and wooded sites, wherever dead timber exists for nesting.

Flight period

Univoltine, flying between late June-late August. 

Nesting biology

Nests solitarily in dead wood and bored timber. It may also nest in hollow stems, although this has not been confirmed in Ireland.

Flowers visited

No observations have been made of this species visiting flowers.
