Species Biology

Identification

  • Small species (body length of workers 2.5-5mm)
  • Head, thorax and abdomen dark brown/black in colour
  • Easily confused with other Lasius species and microscopic examination is required

Diet

Poorly known. Like other Lasius species, it possibly relies heavily on honeydew secreted by aphids and supplements this diet with insects.

Habitat

Associated with damp habitats, including damp woodland, wet grasslands and bogs, usually well away from human habitation.

Flight period

Males emerge in June and persist until August. Workers are likely to be seen during the warmer months of the year in spring, summer and early autumn.

Nesting biology

Nests are primarily associated with deadwood, such as rotting stumps and fallen trunks. They may also be constructed in peat and among consolidated leaf litter. They typically include a single queen and several hundred workers.
