Identification
- Body length: 5.5- 6.5mm
- Head and abdomen black in colour
- Thorax primarily black, often with a yellow scutellum and pronotal collar
- Black legs with subtle yellow bands
- Difficult to distinguish from other Crossocerus species and the use of a microscope is required
Habitat
A variety of habitats are used, including open woodlands, woodland edges and parks.
Flight period
Univoltine, flying between June- September.
Nesting biology
Nesting occurs solitarily in bare soil, such as clay banks (even in shady situations). Several cells may be constructed, in which paralyzed flies have been deposited. The female will lay an egg in each cell and the developing larvae will feed on the deposited flies.
Flowers visited
Umbellifers, particularly Hogweed.
