Species Biology
Identification
- Small species (body length of workers: 3.5-4.5mm)
- Head, thorax and abdomen of workers brownish-yellow
- Queens and males brownish in colour
- Could be confused with other Lasius species and microscopic examination is required in most cases
Diet
Similar to Lasius flavus. A range of small organisms and the honeydew of root aphids are used.
Habitat
Found in several habitats including grasslands, woodland edges and scrub.
Flight period
Males are on the wing during the summer, between July-September. Workers are likely to be active for much of the year, but more so during the spring and summer months.
Nesting biology
Nests are formed by usurping those of Lasius flavus and other Lasius species, although the precise hosts in Ireland are unclear. Nesting sites are also poorly known in Ireland but are believed to include soil beneath large stones.
