- Medium sized solitary species (7-11mm)
- Mandible is bidentate (has two teeth, most species are unidentate)
- Abdomen is predominantly red and black striped, but can have patches of yellow at the sides
- Females have a distinctive two tone antennae- the tip and lower half are red/brown separated by black segments in between
