Identification
- Body length: 2-3mm
- Head, thorax and abdomen black in colour
- Legs brownish in colour
- Very small size with no clear distinguishing features
- Easily confused with other small black solitary wasps and microscopic examination with specialist keys are necessary for identification
Habitat
The few Irish records suggest an association with wooded sites and mature gardens.
Flight period
Univoltine, flying between June-August in Ireland. It may also be found in May and September.
Nesting biology
Nesting has been observed in old stumps and posts, indicating a preference for holes constructed in deadwood. Little else is known about the structure of the nest, but females reportedly prey on the larvae of thrips (Thysanoptera).
