Identification

Note: Early Dog-violet is not common. Unless you are a recorder known to the Data Centre, records of this species should be accompanied by a photograph showing the spur.

  • Flowers from March to May
  • Solitary blue-violet flowers with five petals
  • The lower petal has a stout, blunt, straight spur that is darker than the petals and does not have a notch
  • The leaves are heart-shaped with toothed margins and are on long, slender stalks

Don’t confuse with the Common Dog-violet. In this species the spur at the back of the flower is paler than the petals and is notched at the tip.

Preferred environment

Dry deciduous woods, hedgerows. Prefers shady calcareous ground
